How thoughtfully crafted rugs can elevate your home

Ada in indigo

A rug does so much more than simply cover the floor. It sets the tone for your entire room. From texture and pattern to pile and material, every detail in a rug contributes to how a space feels, both underfoot and to the eye.

At Ernesta, we obsess over every single one of these details. Our collection is built around craftsmanship, quality and thoughtful design. Whether it’s a hand-knotted style with a unique finish, a wool flatweave rug for cozy comfort, or a piece crafted from natural fibers, each design is carefully designed to transform your space in an instant. Here, we break down exactly what quality means when it comes to our rugs, and how you can get one step closer to choosing the perfect foundation for your home.

Hand-crafted quality and charm

When it comes to rugs, there’s a level of detail and character found in handmade styles that you just can’t replicate with a machine. Hand-knotted rugs and handwoven rugs are exactly as they sound: woven or loomed by hand to create pieces with beautiful irregularity and that nuanced, perfectly imperfect look. Another benefit of the handmade process is greater flexibility. Because the fibers don’t need to fit into a machine, heavier-weight yarns can be used to create a greater range of textures and a richer interpretation of patterns.

To bring this hand-crafted charm to your space, consider Ada with its marled yarn and subtle striping, Maya for Moroccan-inspired pattern and boucle texture, or Paula with its herringbone pattern that pairs well with nearly anything. And because our rugs are custom-sized to your exact dimensions (down to the inch!), any handmade style you choose will be one-of-a-kind and unique to your taste and space.

Detailed textures and rug-weaving techniques

When it comes to adding visual variation, depth, and coziness, there’s nothing like texture. Employing a rich mix of textures is a sure-fire way to make any room sing, and with rugs, the textural options are nearly limitless. Our team works hard to design rugs with inventive weaving techniques, creating piles and textures that feel cozy, full of character, and seamlessly fit in with a range of decorating schemes.

If you’re looking for a rug brimming with texture, here are a few favorite picks to consider. Cormac features an oversized, sweater-inspired weave created from felted cord yarn. Ellis, while a flatwoven rug, incorporates thicker yarns into a classic check pattern to create added texture. And Faye and Lissie offer nubby, woven surfaces, perfect for introducing a subtle sense of depth and tactile charm.

Elevated patterns

Patterns can work wonders when it comes to defining a room, and our collection of expertly curated designs spans from understated to bold. Subtle, barely there patterns work well for those who prefer a minimalist aesthetic, while more pronounced options make a strong statement without overwhelming a space.

Because rugs often cover a large portion of a room, introducing a patterned rug can dramatically transform your space with just one piece. Cordelia and Isabelle are ideal for those seeking the "pattern-without-a-pattern" look. Montag, on the other hand, features an oversized plaid pattern woven with a subtle chevron texture, perfect for layering pattern and visual interest without overpowering your design.

Rug pile types

Understanding rug pile types is essential when selecting the right rug for your space. Each pile type can produce a dramatically different effect, so it’s important to know exactly what you’re buying before placing your order. (We also offer a rug sampling program to help you see and feel the designs in your space before placing your full-size order.)

Rugs, for the most part, fall into three pile categories: loop piles, cut piles, and flatwoven styles. Loop pile rugs, as seen with Xander, are made from one continuous loop of yarn emerging from the base, creating a durable and structured surface. Cut pile rugs are created by cutting those loops, which exposes the ends of the yarn and gives the rug a soft, almost velvet-like texture (as seen in the lustrous Luna rug).

Flatwoven rugs lack a pile altogether, instead consisting of interlaced yarns in a tight grid—though additional texture can be introduced with thicker yarns and specialty weaving techniques.

Some rugs combine loop and cut piles to produce a varied and textured surface or pattern, while tip shearing is a technique where an entirely looped rug is woven and then shaved after coming off the loom, producing a rich, dimensional effect.

Premium finishes

For an even more customized and polished look, select styles in our collection can be enhanced with premium rug bindings. These aren’t just functional—they’re a subtle design detail that elevates the overall feel of your rug. Instead of a standard serged edge, you can choose from cotton or leather tape bindings, each offering a distinct character and finish.

Cotton bindings provide a soft, refined touch with a 2-inch-wide band that frames your rug without overwhelming it. Leather bindings, by contrast, create a more structured, modern look with a slightly wider 2.5-inch band, perfect for adding a hint of sophistication or contrast. Both options come in a curated range of shades, giving you the freedom to match your rug to your space or introduce a contrasting color for added dimension.

Every binding is hand-mitered using a hidden stitch technique, ensuring a seamless, designer-approved edge that’s both durable and beautiful. Whether you prefer a subtle, understated look or a bold finishing detail, premium bindings are a simple way to make your rug feel complete, tailored and unmistakably yours.
